Angus: An Update!

Angus relaxing after a visit in the Fireplace
Angus curled up and relaxing

I awoke one morning to him sitting on the bed next to me. I took one look at him and thought, "Hmmm, I must be really sleepy because Angus looks hazy." Upon closer inspection, I realized that it wasn't my vision that was affected, it was Angus exploring our (obviously unlit) fireplace during the night! I especially like the photo because he has that, "I know I'm dirty but, c'mon, how about a scratch anyway?" look about him. I sent the photo go my husband via e-mail and his response was, "What happened to Angus? He looks like he's been rolling in an ashtray!"

00" align="left" border="0"> Angus was at the vet's office earlier this summer because he came down with a case of sneezes -- as in, like allergies. (The vet diagnosed him as having a reaction to stress -- we'd gone on vacation for 4 days and, while we had someone feed and pet him during our absence, he still missed us and sneezing was his reaction. Happily, it cleared up within a week.) Sneezes aside, she gave him a clean bill of health.

Angus celebrated this second year of being a member of our family in January of this year. We sang happy birthday, gave him an extra can of cat food, and the kids insisted on a party hat for him that he gamely -- and patiently -- wore for all of 30 seconds.

Angus is an amazingly smart cat (an antithesis of our previous MC, Buddy -- as my husband would say of Buddy, "He lives 20 seconds in the past...." He doesn't say that about Angus!). When we play tag with him using a toy on a string, instead of following us around corners, he will run around the other way. Besides being smart, he's also shown that he hasn't lost his hunting skills.

The other day, Angus slipped out (he does go AWOL once or twice a year) and when he came back in, he had a dead rat in his mouth. He put it down next to him on the floor and sat VERY PROUDLY by his catch. (We forget that Angus was an outdoor kitty in his previous life. More impressive is that he has no bottom fangs so he caught the rat using his top two fangs.) Of course, that set off a bunch of, "ewwws" from Katie and even more, "oooh, cool!"s from David.

The kids absolutely adore Angus and, Katie, especially has become his special guardian. Besides feeding him in the mornings, she gives him his daily brushings. (Katie plays girls softball and, last year, the back of her jersey read, "Angus." This year, it read, "Angel Puss" (her favorite baseball team (Angels) and her nickname for Angus, "Puss". It was funny having to explain to fellow parents why Katie's jersey said "Angus" and "Angel Puss" while their daughters' had names like, "Slammer," "Striker," "Turbo," etc.)
