About SAFE, Saving Animals from Euthanasia
SAFE is our Parent Non-Profit Organization. Donations to Maine Coon Adoptions should be made out to SAFE, but the money will go to MCA. SAFE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law; you can save kitties and save on taxes too.

How we Use your Donations:

MCA wants our adopters and donors to know that their adoption fees and donations go directly to help kitties!  By far the largest part of our income goes directly to veterinary bills, because we want to make sure all of our kitties are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested, and healthy before they go to their new homes. Another large part of our money goes for microchipping expenses. We think microchipping is so important that we microchip all of our kitties before they are adopted.

Please click here to see our Annual Expense & Income Reports.

We typically spend much more on a kitty than the adoption fee the new family pays. Between vet exams, vaccinations, and treatment for illness and other conditions, we often struggle to pay our bills. All funding for our rescue work comes from donations, adoption fees, and fundraising activities. The more money we can raise, the more kitties we can save. As one of our donors said, "You guys do great work, and you need money to do it."

Rescue Costs vs. Adoption Fees: 2007

Every donation, no matter what size, helps. Did you know that:

  • $12 pays for a rabies vaccination
  • $44 pays for one kitty being tested for FIV/FELV
  • $40 - $50 pays for an office visit to a "rescue friendly" vet
  • $114 pays for a senior screening blood panel to check systemic health for older cats

Beau's Story: Beau appeared healthy when rescued from a shelter, but he developed a serious eye infection and ended up requiring ointments, pills, and surgery to deal with an eye ulcer. When the vet unwrapped his eye after the surgery, he told us we had saved the eye and that he would have lost it without the surgery. It was expensive, but worth it to see Beau completely healed and adopted by a loving family.

MCA "WISH LIST"

In kind donations also help keep our kitties happy and healthy while they're in foster care, and help get them into Forever Homes. We have a continuous need for:

  • kitty carriers
  • digital or disposable cameras (for web site photos)
  • kitty food
  • kitty toys

If you can donate any of these items, please e-mail or call us at elaineln@pacbell.net or 510-482-6179, and we'll figure out how to get them from you to us.
